Renewing the Journey: The Youth Covenant
May 14, 2004
The establishment of the Anglican Centre for Youth Ministry Studies (ACYMS) was ratified by Te Hinota Whanui / The General Synod at its biennial meeting in Rotorua, May 9-14, 2004. This was done as part of the Synod’s adoption of The Youth Covenant, which was presented to the Synod in a document as follows:
The Need
In recent years, ministry among young people has become an increasingly vital part of the life and mission of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia.
However the reality is that we are still far from effective, and we need to reawaken ourselves to the challenge of youth.
Our church is called to make a real difference in the world in which we live. In order for us to effectively proclaim the good news of the Kingdom to young people the church must transform. This transformation can be effected through a covenant.
The Youth Covenant
That we, the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia, and its young people, commit to a covenant of transformation under which we will:
- Recognise the struggle and potential of youth
- Respect the nature of the Anglican journey across our three Tikanga
- Enable the voices of youth to be heard
- Seriously consider the resourcing needs of youth ministry and mission
So that together we can more effectively pursue our mission and continue this Journey to which Christ calls us.
